Patrols and provides security and crime prevention in and around the court; provides safety to the court staff and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are not all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

01 Maintains security by controlling access to the Courthouse. Operates electronic metal detection equipment both walk through and handheld. Conducts inspection and search as necessary of objects and persons attempting entry into the courthouse within the legal limits of the law or judicial order of the court.

02 Maintains high visibility in and around the courthouse to prevent unlawful behavior or actions. Patrols hallways and courts. Does security checks of the building for instruments, devices and weapons.

03 Responds to disturbances and medical crisis, responds to facility mechanical failure, fire and natural disaster impacting the building and surrounding area.

04 Responds to the needs of the court and directions of the judges in the quieting, removal and arrest of persons and detention of persons pending law enforcement arrival.

05 Prepares reports regarding security incidents or actions taken, maintains written record of activities and prepares reports as necessary.

06 Develops and maintains proficiency in the use of a variety of equipment associated with the security of the courthouse.

07 Informs the public and answers inquiries regarding directions, appropriate department, and other general assistance.

08 May provide escort of court personnel and jury members as deemed necessary.

09 Is an employee of the Sheriff, appointed as a special deputy and answers to any Sheriff member of a higher rank, but may respond to request of the court as appropriate.

10 Carries out all lawful orders of the court.

11 Must qualify with firearms pursuant to Sheriff's Office Policy.

Education and/or Experience

High school or GED certificate, age 21, no criminal history that involves serious misdemeanors, felonies or extensive driving record. Prior law enforcement experience is preferred.

Work Schedule

This position is part-time. The normal work schedule is 19 hours per week; exact schedules are assigned by the Sheriff. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work.
