The incumbent plans and directs the following Public Works functional areas:

  • Engineering division
  • Road and Bridge Maintenance/Construction division
  • Noxious Weed Control division
  • Storm Water Drainage division

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.                            

01 Plans and schedules maintenance and construction projects within the various divisions of the Public Works Department.

02 Conducts routine inspections of roads, bridges and drainage systems; identifies maintenance requirements; directs road supervisor to complete specific maintenance projects.

03 Assigns and monitors work of all supervisory personnel in each division; assists with problems and provides direction when needed.

04 Responds to inquiries and complaints from the public; takes appropriate action as necessary.

05 Administers projects under contract and ensures completion in accordance with plans and specifications; confers with contractor during construction to discuss progress of projects, potential problems or interpretation of plans and specifications.

06 Corresponds with other agencies, utility companies and citizens that may be affected by County projects.

07 Prepares cost control reports for force account work in the Road Division.

08 Checks partition and subdivision plats for conformance with the State Statutes and County Land Development Code.

09 Prepares the final specifications for purchase of vehicles, machinery, materials and services through the competitive bidding process for the Public Works Department.

PAY TYPE: Salaried   SALARY/GRADE: DF17 RANGE: $6387-$8082

The County currently provides annual pay increases upon satisfactory job performance on a seven step scale. Starting salary depends on qualifications.  

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

01 Current Driver's License

Education and/ or Experience

Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, engineering technology or related field required (a degree in public administration is desirable); a minimum of six years experience in a Public Works Department, four of which must have been at the administrative level required. Professional Engineer preferred. Must have demonstrated ability to effectively and harmoniously interact with citizens, staff, elected officials, State and other local governments.

Work Schedule

This is an Exempt position requiring beyond the minimum of 40 hour per week. Normal office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. This position will require work beyond these days and times on a regular basis.
