Performs skilled mechanical work of a journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of all types of gasoline and diesel vehicles, trucks and equipment. Performs skilled welding and fabrication work as needed as well as lubricates, fuels and performs routine servicing of automotive equipment used in the Klamath County Public Works Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

01 Makes minor repairs or replacements to water pumps, starters, cylinder heads, thermostats and alternators and other mechanical components of a vehicle. Replacement of tail lights, headlights, broken wires, windshield wipers, fan belts, etc.

02 Makes major engine repairs to all subassemblies in both diesel and gasoline equipment.

03 Troubleshoots and repairs all malfunctions in electrical systems, which may include complete wiring.

04 Trouble shoots and makes repairs to clutches and transmissions, which includes complete reconditioning.

05 Makes adjustments to differentials and replaces as necessary.

06 Replaces or reconditions hydraulic or air type brakes.

07 Removes, installs, reconditions and reseals hydraulic systems.

08 Welding and fabrication as needed by the department.

09 Cuts limbs, brush and trees with chain saw as needed in emergencies.

10 Services automobiles, trucks and other construction equipment with fuel, oil, grease, water and air.  Cleans and washes autos, trucks and equipment.

11 Places vehicles in appropriate storage area; sweeps shop, picks up debris, dead animals and garbage from County road right-of-way and maintains battery room and fuel station.

12 Keeps records of service to vehicles and equipment. Places sticker on vehicles noting service date and indicating when next service due.

Work Schedule

The normal work schedule is 8.00 hours per day 5 days per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. Currently this position works 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 

01 Oregon Class A Commercial Driver's License (Endorsements for Tank Doubles/Triples and Air Brakes) can be obtained after employment.

02 Current Medical Cards

03 Must provide own personal hand tools.

04 CPR Certification-can be obtained after employment.

05 First Aid Certification - can be obtained after employment.

Education and/ or Experience

Education and training in diesel engine repair from an accredited school or experience as a journeyman mechanic in gasoline and diesel engine repair; knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and light and heavy equipment.
